Place: Konya
From 10 to 17 December, in commemoration of the death of Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi. This event takes place in the city of Konya in Mevlana Culture Centre (Mevlana Kültür Merkezinde). Mevlana's birthday is on the 30th of September however the festival is held every year after the 10th of December which is the death of Mevlana.
The festival is called “ Şeb-i Aruz” in Turkish which means “the wedding night”. The reason why the death of Mevlana is celebrated is that Mevlana reached to his divine love God Allah.
There are ritual dances called “Sema” performed by the Whirling Dervishes. The Sema consist of five parts, the first three of which are prayers, greetings and musical improvisations. The ritual then moves into four salutes: truth through knowledge, the splendour of creations, total submission before God and coming to terms with destiny.
The most significant position during the dance is the shape of the hands. Right hand is open and showing up and left hand is showing down while dancing. This position symbolizing that he is taking the gifts from the God and reaching to the humans and the immateriality of the body.
